Bullying and Harassment
Prevention
Thank
you for your interest in the Pacific Violence Prevention Institute's
Bullying and Harassment Prevention Services. Our goal is to help
your institution develop and sustain an effective violence prevention
program; a program that helps to create an atmosphere at your school
where acts of violence can be prevented.
While
there are many programs available that work to respond to bullying and
harassment, the focus of most of these programs is training
teachers, administrators, and staff to identify bullies (students
who demonstrate a pattern of behavior that victimizes other students in
an attempt to gain power over them) and effectively intervene in their
behavior. We approach the problem in a fundamentally different
way. Our programs focus on training students, teachers,
administrators, and staff to intervene in the bullying behavior
that most students engage in (behavior such as put downs, spreading
rumors, offensive jokes, stereotyping, etc). By taking action to
intervene in these “less severe” acts of violence, an atmosphere can be
created that makes it difficult for violence to escalate
.
